It is not a clearing boreal virgin forest. These forest have been burned on 2005. You can see an ecosystemic harvest of burn forest

This forest has been cut in 2004 by Kruger cie in their first summer of activities on René-Levasseur Island.
This picture was taken in 2005 right after the fire. This fire that we can see on that picture is a fire that took place only on the clearing spot probably due to effect of lightning that hit the remnent dry white birches combinated with the presence on the ground of cutting residues (dry branches). We can clearly see the effect of fire on the cutted stocks (so the fire took place after the cutting), this is much relevant.
I've been doing scientific investigations on that island since 2004. An ecosystemic burned harvest plan was developped, but I didn't notice it was executed properly. And in fact, harvesting burned forest cannot be considered as ecosystemic management of forest, while it goes directly in opposite of natural regeneration of burned forests that needs to remain undisturbed to maintain soil integrity. The use of artificial plantation on the burned harvested sites in 2007 reveals the lack of true ecosystemic management.

When there is a fire on a cut area, you have always to use artificial regeneration because there is no trees left to disperse seeds...! Also, the SOPFEU has stopped this fire before it has burned completly the organic soil (this is essential for the seeds because they can not develop in organic soil...). By the way, for me, harvesting a part of a burned area can be part of an ecosystemic management strategy.
