such a timeless sight... a moment frozen; yet fluid with a rhythm as ancient as human history... I was right there in 1970-71.. I was 19, then 20.. a 'man' I guess, but in many ways (most ways) still a boy... forced to fight.. forced to 'grow up'.. wanting to stay alive.. wanting to 'please my elders'... I came upon so many old, old, tombs and temples.. so many people wanting to be left alone.. wanting the North to leave.. wanting the Americans to leave.. wanting their rice and children to grow.. there always seemed to be an almost-heard whisper in the wind as it would forever blow; sometimes hard, sometimes softly... maybe the whispering was just something in me trying to make sense of it all.. I don't know that I ever will... I'm glad things are as they once were in the Annanite Mountains and the narrow strip of fertile land between the foothills and the sea... where Hue has lain for centuries.. old... watching the rhythm.. watching her people work the fields.. interrupted sometimes by the invading Chinese.. Europeans.. northern communists.. Americans.. still the Song Bo and Perfume Rivers flow down from the high hills near the A Shau valley and bring the rich soil to the fields to feed the rice.. feed the farmers..she doesn't seem to be smiling as she gathers the rice in the very hot sun.. but I know she is.. she smiles if she is simply left alone to live her life..
if anyone ever reads this and wants to say hello.. my name is Allen.. in my youth I stood where she is working in the early morning sun.. my email is: firstname.lastname@example.org
