Hallo Nick and thank you for the visit! This is my jetty at my holiday home on the Breede River in the Soutern Cape. We had an enourmous flood here on the 13th & 14th November 2008. This jetty with my waterpump on it washed away during the flood! Over 150 jettys was lost and lots of boats aswell and many houses was completely under the water and ruined! This was the highest flood since an even higher one in 1906! They say it is the global warming that is causing this! The flood level was more than 18 meter above high tide, as this is a tidal river and my house is about 31 kms from the sea! Fortunately the water levl in my house was only about 250mm deep, but enough damage and mud galore! Best regards! Johan.

You should be like me Johan ~ my Gosport flat is literally right on the waters edge ~ I'm on the top floor 13 floors up. I expect to moor the boat to my balcony in twenty years time! Sorry you had all those problems and lets hope it takes another 100 years for the next one!

That was a quick response Nick! I sure hope we have to wait another 100 years! Cheers! Johan. PS: My holiday house It is about 80 meters from the water. Greetings! Johan.

Hallo Lukas. It is safe in South Africa, as long as you do not venture off into "townships" our equivalent for a getto! Stay in a group and try not to go anywhere alone! You will be pleasantly surprised! Much to see and you will visit again! Greetings! Johan.

This is my private jetty at my holiday home on the Breede River! ....and the fishing is good in the summer months! Greetings! Johan.

dear johan: has families and bathers been put off swimming due to the presence of sharks in the river ?

H.J. van Zyl, on August 31, 2010, said:

Hi again Michael, no, not really! People go on waterskiing and swimming as in the past! We are about 30 odd Kms from the River Mouth and the sharks are mostly there! We have not seen any sharks here, but heard lots of rumors! Friendly greetings from Cape Town, South Africa! Johan

Hi HJ , thank you for your replies. i love your photo`s , the place is so beautiful! thinking of going to malgas more often. which direction does the wind usually blow from ? it will help me to decide which direction the patio should ideally face to best enjoy vacations.

michael Where we are, the river runs more or less from north to south! The wind is mostly from the south east! But the river winds so much, that there is always somewhere where there is no wind!

Thank you also Kathy, don't we all want to be there! Luckily I will be going there AGAIN tomorrow until the week - end! Greetings! Johan
