Nanabijou, Nanabijou, Spirit of the deep sea waters, Whilst on rocky couch you slumber; Do you hear your people calling As the autumn leaves are falling, Nanbijou?

Hearken, oh Great Spirit, hearken, To the voice of war-drums beating; Telling of the White man's plunder, When your veins were rent asunder For the wealth that you are guarding. Nanabijou.

Do you hear them not, Great Spirit? Hear them not in roar of thunder As it rumbles o'er the great lake? As the thunderous waves on shore break? Hear you not the Ojibway calling, Nanbijou?

Once a proud race roamed your forests Where the summer breeze through pine sings. Once from wigwams 'round the campfire You could hear your people chanting; Hear their voices in the twilight Nanabijou.

This was their land, Nanbijou. Dusky children roamed your pathways; Played and laughed with carefree glee. But the Sioux betrayed your secret Of the wealth beneath the sea Nanabijou.

Cold your crouch and white your blanket; Still you slumber undisturbed! Hear you not the screech of seabird? Feel you not the Lion's destruction? Know you not of man's erosion, Nanabijou?
