Local lore says this tree came to Port Townsend from the Emperor of China sometime in the 1860s. According to this story, the tree was actually one of a pair of trees sent to San Francisco as a thank-you gift and goodwill gesture. The trees arrived in Port Townsend by accident when the ship carrying them ran into severe weather crossing the Pacific and was blown off course. It arrived battered and bruised in Port Townsend, where the city helped the crew repair their ship. To show his appreciation, the captain gave Port Townsend one of the trees, and the city has had it every since. Several years ago, a windstorm brought most of the huge tree to the ground but many seedlings have taken root in the area.
