The odd thing is that I've been familiar with the immediate area for decades, but I didn't know about this old lighthouse so I had never looked for it--and most people wouldn't see it without hunting. But it was mentioned in a book my husband is reading, so we looked. What a gem we found--from a distance!

This lighthouse turned out to be ineffective, so in 1869 the upper and lower range lights were constructed. When sailors lined up those two buildings by day or the two lights at night, they knew they could steer a safe course into the harbor.
