This is the hole as first seen at about 2 pm on Friday, July 11th, 2008. Its approximate location is in front of the Gateway Flats, just down from the statue of Charles Stewart Rolls (co-founder with Sir Henry Royce of Rolls Royce motor cars) when heading towards the Eastern Docks.

I usually cycle along the promenade 3 times a day (this being my 2nd trip) so I guess I may have been lucky when I came this way at about 6,30 am!

There are 6 photos altogether (though I may add more later), taken over a period of 5 days:

1 The hole as first seen on Friday, July 11th

2 The expanded hole and partial shoring on Monday, July 14th

3 Interior of the hole on Tuesday, July 15th

4 The hole looking West on Tuesday, July 15th

5 The hole looking East on Tuesday, July 15th

6 Wide-angle view of the hole on Tuesday, July 15th

These photos are also indexed under the "Holes" tag.

Photos 1 and 2 were taken using my Samsung G800 5 Mpx camera phone, the others with a Pentax K100D DSLR.

Looks like the sea undermined the sidewalk, in America we call these sink holes that are usually cause by underground streams. Did this one swallow a 200 kilo woman on the missing bench? Or maybe the Chunnel is collapsing.

I think you're right about the underground streams being the cause of this sink-hole, wabieagle.

As I'm sure you know, the "White Cliffs of Dover" are made of chalk, and although the River Dour doesn't appear to come anywhere near this section of the seafront, a number of tiny fresh-water streams are always present on the beach as the tide goes out.
