Dag Hans,

Mooie foto's!

The Lido is really cheap and lies of course in a very vivid and interesting "barrio". If you manage to get a room in the upper floors, they will be comfortable because they have a small balcony (from where I took some of the photos). The walls between the rooms are very thin, so if you should like to warch TV, it might be, that you listen to three different programs at one time. May be, you are even forced to listen to a live performance in your neighbour's room, because the prostitutes have no problems to enter the bar in the lobby to buy some cigarettes, ask for fire and accompany the big spender to his room. Around the Lido, you find people who want to sell or rent nearly everything to you (drugs, rum, cigars, girls, boys, rooms for one night…). They are a real plague, and you'll be safe only, when you keep near a policeman (the distance had to be less than 10 m in 2003). Otherwise they will talk to you, and after two minutes you know, what they have to offer you. But normally they do you no harm. The problem ist, that you tend to feel like a living purse in la Habana after a few days there… The biggest problem in Lido was the breakfast in the Restaurant every second day, when it took an evidently mentally handicapped young lady, who was dressed like a waitress, more than half an hour to bring a toast, an egg and a cup of tea, although the roof terrace was nearly empty and the breakfast was already prepared. Everything else was o.k., but when I should visit Cuba again, I would stay in a private residence. I happened to see two of them, and they were in a very good condition and rather cheap. If your're interested, I can give you E-Mail adress and telephone number of one of them, which ist situated in Vedado, quite different from Central and Old Havanna.

So let me know, if you're interested in it.

Dag,

Hans
