In stovewood construction, short logs were placed perpendicular with the wall plane and mortared in place. Door and Bayfield Counties in Wisconsin are the two areas in the U.S. where where the largest number of examples have been found. This style of construction was used primarily because it provided good insulation.

Thanks for your comment, Mary Alice. We were on our way home, and I thought I'd taken enough pictures for one outing. But when I saw the sky and the lighting (on something I intended to photograph "someday"), I knew that this was the moment!
