Steamers sailed up the river on the tide and exchanged cargoes with the barges at the 'Steamer hole'. The barges were then towed up the river from the bank by horses. 'Tow paths' were specially constructed for the horses.

Thanks. No excavations as such. Do you mean the red areas when you zoom out? If so then you are looking at it in the background. Must be a false colour interpretation of the hill vegetation.
