Unlike the traditional charnel houses in cities, where burial space was limited and graves had to be re-used, this one in the spacious graveyard of St Helen's church at Cliffe was used for the temporary storage of corpses found drowned in the nearby river Thames, until they could be identified (or not) and buried.
