This house was built for Robert Deniro and it's definitely expensive and grand. Most houses in Sedona tend to blend seemlessly into the landscape (southwestern 'Pueblo' style) with a sense of respect for the surroundings. My understanding is that this home has angered most Sedona residents because it looks so out of place, like it belongs in Beverly Hills or on the coast of the Mediterranean. This house, located right across the street from the Chapel in the Rock stands in stark contrast to the chapel itself, the design of which is a dramatic example of integrative architecture and respect for the surrounding landscape. This house basically gives Frank Lloyd Wright, the Chapel, and the people of Sedona a big middle finger.

Dear Rigamarole: I took a photo of the house because it looked so out of place. Yes, it is smack across the beautiful church. The city of Sedona obviously gave the permits to build the house. Morally I think it was wrong but they could have stopped it. I am not going to defend or condemn it, it is just a big house. There are many big houses in Sedona, I think most Sedona residents are mostly upset about the outsider showing them off with his Hollywood money. What ever the reason, they will have to get used to it.

Yeah,in fairness, it is a gorgeous (if somewhat garish)house. Money talks and Sedona is definitely no exception. You're absolutely right that someone/some committee must have approved the home's construction, so it's not fair to blame Deniro (except maybe for a lack of architectural thoughtfulness). On the other hand, the house is definitely buzz-worthy ("no such thing as bad publicity" as they say...)and people talk about it. One could argue that the talk contributes to the home's cache and it's value as a property: Not a good reason for poor design, but true nonetheless. I'll bet the views from the house are amazing, what with the chapel and the towering rocks behind the chapel, not to mention the view out across Sedona. Yep...It's fair to say that I'm jealous. I'd love to see a tour of this house, though I suspect Deniro won't be doing any "Cribs" episodes anytime soon. Anyroad, thanks for the photo!

I agree with you 100%

Let me tell you guys one thing, that house wasn't built for DeNiro or any other celebrity from Holywood. That house belongs to a Romanian inventor that has over 30 inventions patterned here in the USA and more than that every surgery that uses laser is because of him. He is one of the smartest guys in medicine inventions and believe me he deserves to have anything he wants. BTW i have seen bigger houses than this and the owners were something like Paris Hilton who is using her brain only sometimes... No offense!!!

No offense taken ;-) Thanks for the clarification.

I don't understand all the fuss. It is a beautiful house, partially carved into the redrock. As for FLW I don't think he would be upset, he has designed just as big and out of place homes as well. The chapel sticks out like a sore thumb, especially with its massive cross and pale color.

One could say with its deep red color, multiple curves and arches that this home fits in better with the natural surroundings than many of the other homes in Sedona.
