Vonitsa is built in the mouth of the Amvrakikos gulf. It is near the location where the ancient port Anaktorion was. Anaktorion was a Corinthian colony of the 630 BC. Its flourishing was due to the benefits the emperor Alexios Komninos I had granted to the region in the early Byzantine period.
Later, in the period of the Despotate of Epirus the region became a strategic location because of its geographical position and its important port.
