Historic Shannon Railway station beneath a threatening sky. The station was built by the old Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company about 1902. The company was taken over by the New Zealand Government Railways in 1908. A platform verandah was added about 1913. Shannon was the centre of a vast flax (phornium tenax) growing and processing industry from the late 1800’s until the 1920’s. This was baled and shipped out by rail and together with passenger traffic Shannon became a busy rail depot. In later years most of the flax industry declined. Shannon is now a produce and farming centre and the station now only hosts two stopping passenger trains each week-day (2008.) The main line through the town, however, sees up to 40 freight trains pass through daily. The building has been preserved by the local community and houses a museum.
