Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Richmond, VA c. 1906
Dear r.w., this is a truly iconic photograph for which "L&F" seems too faint praise. However it is certainly L&F and "postcard" too if you like. If I were a little experimental I might also stick my tripod in or around the featured trash receptacle, and then I would have to tilt my camera up a bit to capture the entire church--which might affect the severe verticality of the Federalist-style porch, of course--but then I might gain an additional appreciation of the huge mass before us.
What an interesting agglomeration of architectural styles! I am surprised by what appear the narrowness and fewness of the windows, almost a Norman-Romanesque designed to defend against a flight of arrows! By 1906 you might have expected a lightness and airiness informed by the lacy French Gothic, but this looks ready for bomb attacks from World War One Zappelins . . . .
