The Lancaster to Kendal canal once passed under this bridge. The Northern end is now filled in, and South from here you can see the M6 slicing across the old route. I think the furthest point North of the canal is now approx 1.4 miles to the South from here at N 54 15 43.85 W 2 44 08.62 There are optimistic plans to restore the canal northwards to Kendal.

Thanks for your input. Travelling North from Tewitfield, the most northerly point one might reach by boat from Lancaster, the line of the canal is disected at six points. At Tewitfield itself by the A6070, by the M6 at Cinderbarrow, at Holme by North Road, at Millness/Crooklands by the A65 and again by the M6 and again it is cut SW of Stainton, where in fact the runing water stops. From this point the canal continues, "dry" through the Hincaster tunnel, turning North at Levens and is cut again by the A590. At this point onwards, it is often only a slight depression until it reaches Natland, from when on the line of the canal "disappears", but for a bridge, as it makes it's way to Canal Head at Kendal. There is also a sight disruption SW of Farleton where the M6 again crosses the canal, but as far as I remember, only the tow-path is blocked. I have followed the "optimistic" restoration plans with some interest, but the last figures that I saw in 2002 were put at £62.5m, what is that in today's money? £150m? £200m? it goes on. And as far as extending the canal to Windermere, God only knows.
