A lot of forest fires just burn over the top. In July of 2003, the Barriere Fire didn't; it burned everything down to the clay.

Thanks, Conrad,

The aftermath of the fire was desolate. I wonder what it looks like today.

Unfortunately when I was there yesterday I didn't have a chance to take any photos - a lot of snow on the ground anyway. But miles and miles of nothing but sticks on the hills.

In louis Creek the reason it burned down to clay was that it exploded here. The tolko mill that burned was one of the last mills that ran off propane. and although they let off some of the 100,000 gallon propane tanks, they were evacuated before completion. So Louis Creek essentially exploded. My family home was lost, But rebuilt now, gardening is still challenging due to the lack of nutrients after the topsoil had been burnt. It is now just dry and windy here and ugly too.

Sorry to read it's still so ugly. In time, new plants take root and the forest regenerates; in the meantime, you've got this. Cheers, Kent
