The rather unusual name is 'probably derived from a river called Shiter `... a brook used as a privy'. Source: http://keithbriggs.info/shit-names.html The Ordnance Survey accidentally re-named it 'Sitterton' a few years ago but the mistake was pointed out and the place has now been given its proper name back.
