It started out as an Abbey on a rock, about AD1000, and grew into a Cathedral surrounded by a walled town. It's 2 km from shore, and was accessible only at low tide by crossing the soft tidal flats. "Pilgrims" still make the trip on foot, though there is now a causeway. It is a spectacular place, and still has an active convent and monastery.
