You'd have to wonder with colours like these, but it likely has to do with what's in the ground, not above it. The hills are named for the grey-blue clay common in the area - a clay that was used to make Blue Mountain Pottery.

I haven't lived in Grey County for a good 20 years now, but I still love the scenery. Good catch.
