Hi Luka, Thanks for your comment. The basket is probably used to take a fighting cock to a cock fight. Best wishes, John

John he smoke ordinary tobacco?

John Adamson on August 24, 2008

Luca, The tobacco would be locally grown in that area of Indonesia. There is quite a lot of tobacco grown in Indonesia and the smell of the smoke is quite different to western tobacco. Regards, John

Oh John n- I somehow missed out on seeing "Old Smiley" here!! He is a real character isn't he?!

Charcoal would be a good medium here, don't you think, John? Very dramatic effect! Now why don't you give it a try when you have a moment to spare??

Warmest wishes and chuckles, Hazel

Hello Hazel, many thanks for visiting "Old Smiley" here. I expect charcoal would be a good medium to depict him but I don't know about me giving it a try, but you are very welcome to of course. You really would chuckle if you saw any attempt that I made.

Warm wishes to you, John

Hi John! This is a very good and a very interesting photo! What is he smoking and what is in that basket? Many friendly greetings! Anton Trötscher

John Adamson on May 26, 2013

Hi Anton, this man would be smoking locally grown tobacco; there is a considerable amount grown in that locality. The basket looks as though it would be for housing a fighting cock for transport to a location where the fights are held.
