'Regarding this, Alexander wrote back and sent Thersippos along with the delegates of Darius, instructing him to deliver the letter and not say a word about anything else. And such was the letter of Alexander: Your ancestors coming to Macedonia and the rest of Greece did great harm to us without having been hurt before. I, myself, being appointed hegemon of the Greeks and wishing to punish the Persians for what you started, crossed to Asia. You assisted the Perinthians, who caused injustice to my father, and to Thrace, that we ruled, Ochus sent a force. The father, being murdered by conspirators that you brought together, as you boast in your letters sent to everybody. You with Bagoas murdered Arses, and seized unjustly the throne contrary to the law of the Persians while serving injustice to the Persians; and sending to the Greeks letters no favorable to me, urging them to fight me; and despatching money to Lacedaemonians and some other Greeks, from the others none of the cities accepted them, the Lacedaeminians took them; and your delegates corrupted my friends and the peace that I established among the Greeks they tried to destroy. I marched against you because of your previous hostilities. I won the previous battle against your generals and satraps, and currently against you and your forces, and I possess the county given to me by the gods. The troops that were under your command that did not die in battle and seeked refuge to my camp, these troops I take care; I did not bring them here but they came voluntarily to my military ranks. Because I am the ruler of all Asia, you come to me. If you are afraid that you will suffer from my gracelessness then send some of your friends to receive assurances. Coming to me, you will receive the mother and the wife and the children and whatever else you want, ask and you will receive; for whatever you can persuade me it will be yours. From here on, whenever you send delegates to me, you should send them as to the King of Asia, never equal to equal. As a ruler of everything that was yours, tell me what you need. Otherwise, I will consider that you cause injustice. And if you have a different opinion about who is the king, stand your ground and fight for it and do not go away because I will march wherever you are going to be.'
