This amazing monolith stands firmly in the churchyard of the All Saints Church, Rudston. The moor grit stone conglomerate was quarried from the Cleveland hills and sited here approx. 2000 years BC. It weighs around 26 tons and is a massive 8 metres high. The largest standing monolith in Britain. Remarkable! Anita

Remarkable is an understatement, Anita!

As an engineer, I can appreciate what it took to mine, transport and erect this without the aid of modern equipment. Hats off to the ancients!

Greetings from northern California,

Paul

Hi Paul, yes it is quite a remarkable feat of engineering, who knows how many people it took to site this enormous monolith. I'm in awe of them. The photo isn't the best but It does show the stones height against the structure of the church. Cheers, Anita

I have visited this monolith! It is amazing how they got it here! The church and graveyard is beautiful too. I have a fascination for very old graveyards! Finally one of your photos in which I have visited the place!

I've struck gold then Paula:) I love these places too, some of the headstones are so interesting. There was a statue of a sad angel overlooking the grave of a little 5 year old girl, I could have wept:( I wish she could have lived to see all the beautiful places and things that surrounds us. Regards, Anita

Interesting and very nice photo Anita. Greetings Luud

Thank you Luud, I'm glad that you found it interesting. I think that this standing stone is the largest one left standing in Europe. They say that there is as much stone in the ground as there is above 8) Regards, Anita
