This view of North Bass Island is looking toward the southwest. You can see Rattlesnake Island, with the Ohio shoreline on the Horizon.
The Isle of St. George Post Office is on this side of the clump of trees next to the airport.
All the land that isn't covered with trees, was dedicated to growing grapes just a few years ago.
You can see some late summer "algae scum" rolling by in "windrows" on the gentle waves.

Joe Dopps lives with his mother Herma, who is the postmaster. The "Post Office" is their house across from the cemetery, on the road that comes this way from from the middle of the airport runway. That would have been the Devore (if I spelled it right)residence and vinyards many years ago.
The KING OF NORTH BASS, Dale Burris, built a new CASTLE for himself SOUTH of that tree rectangle, next to the airport. This picture was taken before that.
He had to move out of his former residence, which was owned by Meiers Wineries (Bob Godesman (?)before that?)... but, became part of the property that was sold to the State of Ohio.
I'm not sure if Yalinski's still live in that big yellow house, closest to the airport runway, or not. I think they still do.
The "church" is on that same road just inside that rectangle of trees.

Joe, ask your mother if she remembers the Zura clan? Puzz, Pete, Mike, Jerry and the girls. Mike Zura was my grandfather and the rest were all great uncles, aunts and cousins. There were some great times on this little island. If these islands could only talk. Now it just sits in the middle of Lake Erie like so many of the others with no more stories to tell. What a shame.
