Many local boaters like to "raft together" on holiday weekends, to just hang out, and/or party together. Sometimes they will have a "stage" or other "entertainment" like a Band or DJ.
This is only small shadow of the kind of gatherings they used to have before the 911 attacks, and tightening of international borders.
This side of the freighter is Canadian land. The boaters next to Stoney Island are in the USA.
All of the trash and sunken barges in this area were used to construct the Livingston Channel.
A railroad once ran out from Grosse Ile onto Stoney Island, to a dock, where vast amounts of lumber and other goods could be loaded onto steamships in water deep enough to accomodate them.
