Additional info with this photograph: Van der Werff was mayor of Leiden during the Spanish siege of 1574. An appocryphal story has it that when the starving citizens of the town came begging him for help with food, he answered: "Then eat me!".

The statue and park are on the location of the 1807 gunpowder explosion.
