The Devil's Washbowl, Malad River gorge at Interstate 84.

In the middle of a rather nondescript section of Interstate 84 just outside of Tuttle, is the Malad River gorge. One is just tooling along as fast as possible, seeing the long stretches of sagebrush and farmland, and suddenly, a very deep gorge flashes underneath.

It's easily missed, and just as easily not fully comprehended. The waterfall in the lower center of the picture is about 60 feet in height, while the whole canyon is about 200 feet deep.

There are three bridges, one for vehicle traffic in each direction, and a smaller one for people to walk across. If heights bother you, I really wouldn't suggest walking across the smaller bridge. If, however, you aren't the type to let a bit of air under your feet disturb you, it has a fantastic view up and down the gorge, plus the vertigo inducing look straight down.

You really do have to be watching out for it if you want to stop. Heading east, from Boise, you get a bit of warning in the form of the little brown sign saying Malad River Gorge, and another about the state park. If you're motoring west, exit at Tuttle, and follow the brown Malad Gorge state park signs. In all the years that I've driven by, this is the first time that I've taken the time to stop. I'm glad I finally did.
