The city of Porto Velho is the terminal for the ships ascending the Madeira River, a tributary of the Amazon, because there is the Cachoeira (Rapids) Santo Antônio about 6 km upstream the city. The rapids are seen in the photo (taken above the city) at the first bent of the river to the right with islands of various sizes. Photo: on March 23, 2007.
