This building ceased to be a gaol many years ago and now houses part of York Castle Museum whose entrance is just out of frame to the left and open to the public.

You an visit the disused prison cells and enjoy the social history of York which is the main theme of the museum.

Thanks, but I'm well aware of all of that, having being born and grown up in York and having taken that photograph about 20mins after having taken my young son for a trip around the place.
