Inaugurated in 1981 the bridge was built on record time after it's predecessor the Almö Bridge collapsed after the Tanker Star Clipper collided with it's spann at 1:30 AM the 18th January 1980 in bad weather. 8 people died in 7 vehicles that plunged into the sea before the bridge could be closed.
