St Mary's on the Bridge is one of only six surviving bridge chapels in this country. There has been a chapel on this site since the 14th century but its use has changed many times. As a chapel it was well placed to afford a blessing to those embarking on a long journey north and west over the river and out of Derby and those arriving. Now, as the centre of the city moves away and the ring road flashes traffic past above it, its position allows it some peace. I took my confirmation classes here in the 60's so am lucky enough to have spent time inside. I've been about a bit but can only think of a couple of places as serene.
