filipa. The monastery fell into disrepair following the dissolution of the monasteries when Henry VIII of England fell out with the church of Rome. He outlawed the catholic faith. Silly man!!
Sterntaucher-Mathias, the view over the town and sea from this location is truly spectacular!!
One day soon, I shall take my tripod to the headland and take a 360' panoramic.
I appreciate your feed back and visit ;>)

Hi! tu-quoque--The ruined monastery is maintained by 'English Heritage'; an organisation whose efforts are dedicated to the up-keep of these Ancient monuments!
shijin0610--I am grateful for your visit and nice compliment ;>)
smcd+dmcd--this is probably one of the most easily recognised of all English Abbey ruins and certainly one of the most photographed ;>)
Bibiana Papp--This is what happens when an English King (Henry VIII) throws a tantrum!! Talk about religious ethnicity, this guy invented it!!
Kind regards to you all ;>)

Hi! Bibiana I am sure that one of his wives bore the brunt of his petulant and tyrannical ways..However, Anne Boleyn lost her head because she failed to produce a son and on the second count was found guilty of incest and other trumped up charges!!
kSj (Klare&John)--you are most welcome, thank you for your lovely compliment ;>))
Cheers

Building history: Masons, the bricklayers if they make a mistake in the cutting or laying of their brick, were given at the end of the day a beating and then at a ceremony was held were they had to go and bury their mistake.

This is a beautiful shot, Jim the perspective is wonderful, and so is the lighting. It makes me want to go there, fickle weather and all!
Cheers!

annanz...I greet you warmly Anna ;>) It is with much pride and appreciation that I feel for your generous appraisal...I am honoured..thank you ;>)
XRHSTOS 191~~~~Christos...your thoughtful comments are much appreciated ;>)
MaryKnapp----There are quite a few treasured ancient monuments in Yorkshire which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year..400,000 to this ruined Abbey alone..It has been the subject of great discussion and of many famous Artists too..This incredible structure can be seen from far away and is a great landmark for miles around..I know that I am almost home when on my journeys around the region on seeing this remarkable Icon..What you don't see here is the relationship the Abbey has with the surrounding cliffs, sea, sky, land and township.
I recently obtained a NIGHT SHOT of the east face..the ornate and delicate tapestry of the finely carved stonework is easy to see ;>)
Many thanks for all your lovely comments ;>)
