Thanks Amelia ! This one was probably 2 inches diameter. Occasionally you'll find one about 4 inches, but that's pretty rare, and I've never found one much bigger washed up on the beach. Re-reading the comments above made me go search for another view that I'd mentioned up there. This one is pretty interesting: a view of an upside-down snail starting to open the door to his home. and it's funny. It's the opercula - the doors to the shells - that I find most interesting. I've got little jars full of them!
There's no accounting for taste in collectibles ;-)
I have never heard of anyone collecting opercula before though :)))
