May i ask what the reason is for that cablecar besides Queensboro Bridge? I can see that here on your photo and we saw that out the busline from central park as well as we drove along the FDR...

It seems to stretch only to Roosevelt Island ???

The cable car is the Roosevelt Island Tram. Housing was developed on the island only within the last 25 years or so. There was no direct access to New York island at the time, although there was a bridge to Queens. Without convenient public transportation, no one would have moved there. (It wasn't connected to the subway system until 1989.)

It occasionally provides some excitement by getting stuck. (Not too funny for the passengers of course.)

Hey Lucia - thank you very much for that... i believe that the people will not that happy when the cable car stops its work right over the River. Or even just 10yards in front of the base!

Maybe on our next Trip we will try to use that exiting way of transportation and visit Roosevelt Island.

I have to admit that i like to see places not pretty often mentioned in travel books.

Lots of travel guides write "east of 1st. Ave." is nothing worth to go. I think that is not a really good idea.
