An image of the older Washington Mutual Tower reflected in the glass of the new WaMu Center. Built in 1986 (nine years before the CEO of Washington Mutual began a rapid, massive expansion of its empire from "only" 9 billion to 300 billion dollars), the Washington Mutual Tower normally appears more solid than the WaMu Center -- which at times almost blends into the sky. The latter was completed in 2007. About this time Washington Mutual stock was selling around $45. Friday, 26 September 2008, trading was suspended on the stock with people offering to sell it at 3 cents but finding no buyers. Washington Mutual is the largest bank failure in history.
