Thank you so much for this image. In 1970, my boyfriend and I slept in our sleeping bags in this portico.

We had arived in Agra late at night, took a taxi to the Taj and as we tiptoed onto the platform, the night watchman asked if we would like a tour. We had a guided tour by the night watchman at midnight. He did not turn on any lights -- and actually I have no idea if there were light to turn on -- so the tour was conducted by flashlight.

We were so moved -- speechless -- at its beauty that we didn't want to reenter the hubub of the "real world", so we walked over to this portico and decided to take our chances. We thought we'd probably be arrested in the morning. Just after sun-up, we heard the soft ringing of a cowbell from the lone cow in the yard, and shortly thereafter heard a man's voice close to us: "Sahib? Mem sahib? Would you like some tea?"

"Yes, thank you," we mumbled from our pillows. Moments later, the porter was back with a hotel-quality tea service on a white tablecloth with teac, sugar, cream, buttered toast and jam.

Only in India.
