The channel between Granville (behind) and Wellington docks (front right). The lock gates are closing - the righthand one being at an angle of approx 45 degrees, the other still flush to the wall. Blue swingbridge opened by the Duke of Wellington in 1846.
A green road sign for a roundabout can be seen on the left of the image, the entrance to the Grand Shaft is just to its right.
On the cliff tops (just left of image center) the treeless part of the horizon denotes the location of the Drop Redoubt
Wellington Dock is named after Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, who was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports from 1829 until 1852.
This is actually the channel between the Tidal Harbour and Wellington docks.
