MARY AND MARTHA
Mary and Martha are two flat topped mountains probably named after the biblical sisters Mary and Martha who tended Jesus’ needs. They are distinctive northerly landmarks just outside the Karoo town of Tarkastad. Mary and Martha are a favoured destination for mountain climbing and motorcycle clubs.
Tarkastad’s southerly landmark are the Winterberg Mountains, located the Winterberg Nature Conservancy and which range from sheer dolerite krantzes to rolling grasslands.
With its cold winters bringing the possibility of snow, the area is well known for trout fishing and features some significant San rock paintings. It has country cottages and lodges to suit every taste.
