Why should that be ignorance? That is indeed a Swiss guard. Some say their uniform was designed by Michelangelo but that's probably untrue. Anyway, they are responsable for the "internal security" inside the Vatican. Basically they are some sort of museum guards because they are mostly unarmed and just guard the doorways and so. The Italian "carabinieri" do all the work. ;-)
