Le pont de Beaugency sur le Loire

The stone bridge of Beaugency is one of the oldest surviving bridges on the Loire river. Though it was partly destroyed and rebuilt many time in its long history, the oldest parts of the bridge date back to the 14th century. It is 460 m long and crosses the river with 24 arches. Its present aspect tracks back to the 18th century, but 7 arches were rebuilt in 1948 after the destruction of the WWII. The small medieval city of Beaugency (you can see its 11th century stone tower in the background) was of considerable importance in the Middle Ages. Two Councils met in Beaugency. The first one in 1104 was about king Philip the 1st, who rests in the abbey of St Benoît sur Loire, east of Orléans. You can get another view of the bridge simply by clicking here.
