The one-room schoolhouse in Canoe Cove is typical of the hundreds that were in use in PEI from the mid-1800's until mid-1970s. This particular schoolhouse was built in the 1850s and was the subject for a number of works by Canadian painter Robert Harris (see http://www.robertharris.ca). Based on the school in the neighbouring community of Long Creek (long since torn down), Robert Harris was inspired to paint "A Meeting of the Schoo Trustees" [http://cybermuse.gallery.ca/cybermuse/search/artwork_e.jsp?mkey=13043]. Photograph shown was taken in 2006 during a school reunion.
