The Molasses Reef Light marks a shallow area of coral reef which attracts divers from all over because of the clear waters and prolific marine life.

Technically, this is a not a light marking a shallow place. It is NOAA National data Bouy Station MLRF1.

A scientific data gathering near coastal weather and sea data for real time use in the NOAA system.

It is lighted so as not to be a night time hazard. It is in a shallow place because it is easier to build structures of this size in shallow water.
