A vista of the Cullin mountains in the Isle of Skye, Scotland. And no, the top part is not a mask that I have placed on this picture. It is a natural overhang in the rock. Nasty weather that particular year. (Original on slide.). Herb

Thanks for looking at this Steve.I wasn't sure about leaving it here as the overall quality is a bit down. To me though it brings back memories of my round trip around Scotland many years ago. As to the scanner - well like you I have several thousand slides and wanted to convert just some to files so I did'nt want to pay £200 up on a dedicated Nikon slide scanner so I purchased an Epson flatbed scanner (Perfection 1660 photo) which has a positive slide lid and special additional slide/negative carrier. It worked really well - I just had to be very careful regarding dust. However as the scanner is now about 5+ years old there is not a proper Vista driver for it - there is a simple driver but that does not do the positive slides very well so now if I want to scan more slides (I have just done a couple of hundred of what I considered 'interesting' slides) I have to connect it to my other PC which still runs XP with the original Epson drivers. You may be able to pick one of these scanners up quite cheap now via Ebay etc. Hope that answers your question Steve. Talk to you again. Herb

Ha ha, Herb, if you reckon the overall quality is a bit down, I should remove every one of my photos forthwith, as it's better than any of them!! I really like this photo, it makes me think of submarines for some reason, maybe I'm thinking of scapa flow or something, but it goes with some of the dark WW2 movies I used to watch with the subs sliding silently out into the open water, away from the craggy safety of their lair....
My imagination has gone a bit overboard perhaps, but this is such an evocative photo, Herb, I love it for that reason. very best wishes to you, sue

Sue - yes this photo certainly brings to mind those sombre days of WW2. I'm still trying to map exactly where I took it. It was raining like mad but I was particularly happy with this shot taken with my old Canon AE1. On the strength of these memories (my first time on Skye) I went on to visit for a full week and several other day trips. No other photo's as good as this though..... Herb

I have an old HP ScanJet scanner. Still good as after all these years. It was new in 2001.
No drivers for Vista (or Mac), so I keep my XP laptop going (4 years old) and plug it into to the scanner.
=)

Good idea to keep your XP laptop going Tony. It's great for jobs like this (plugging into scanner). Only thing is then, you may need to transfer the finished scanned file back into your main computer using a stick or networked system. Vista has many good points but working with old retro hardware is not one of them. Herb
