Dover Castle from the Western Heights Trail, Dover, Kent, UK

One of the trails on the North Downs (Western Heights section) leading to the River Dour Valley. Part of the White Cliffs of Dover can be seen right of center.

Left of center on the skyline stands Dover's Norman Castle.

In the center of the skyline are two buildings, one partially obscuring the other. The taller one (on the right) is the Saxon church of St. Mary-in-Castro and the shorter one on the left is a Roman Pharos or lighthouse. There is another Roman Pharos, further along the ridge in the above photo, known as the Bredenstone. Various dates are given for when Dover's two Roman lighthouses were built and I've become accustomed to using 46 AD.

The fence on the right is to stop people toppling into the extensive dry brick-lined moat system built during the Napoleonic era. Most of it isn't fenced and is accessible to the public.

Unless you know these defenses exist they are just about invisible from the valley floor. An image taken from inside a moat can be seen in this example of the Drop Redoubt.

To the left of Dover Castle's Keep are three masts of the Second World War early-warning Chain Home radar station at Swingate.
