I stayed at the Clown Motel one night in September 2003. On display in the motel office the proprieters have every conceivable sort of clown image, stuffed clown, clown lighters, clown tissue boxes, etc, etc, etc. You name it, they had it. As I checked in, all I could think about was John Wayne Gacy. Gave me the creeps!
And then, to wake up the next morning and find out that the Clown Motel sits next to the town historic cemetery was just iceing on the Gacy cake. Tonapah is an old mining town and the hillsides around the town are covered with mine tailings. A number of the dead in the cemetery date to the early 20th century when a great mine disaster occurred. Very interesting inscriptions on the tombstones. Worth your time to have a walk-through the cemetery. Be respectful though. Naturally! I'm sure there is a story or a song to be gleaned from the cemetery inscriptions.
