In the village Valendas are 13 public fountains. The one in this photo is of wood and was erected in the year 1760. The sculpture is also of wood and shows a rivermaid in honour of the near Rhine in the Ruinaulta (gorge). Valendas as Valendanum goes back to the year 765 a.Chr.

Cocomocomo, thank you so much for your comment and for the Y*! The sculpture on the pole (post, which leads the water into the basin of the fountain) is a symbol for the nixes of the Rhine. Some legends and myths about water sprits. :)

Best wishes, May

Salutations, May

Gruss, May

:) Amitiés, May

Hamza, Igor, Edmundo, thank you all so much for your great comments! The mermaid is very special, it tells a lot about the culture and the connection to the river Rhine. Best greetings, May

This picture is typical also for lots of villages in Alps in Italy!

Mimi, thank you! There may be some similarity for people, who don't know the region, but people who are familiar with it, can tell immediately if it is in Switzerland or Italy. Regards, May
