The church, residential wing and guesthouse formed the nucleus of Our Lady of the Prairies. With plans inspired by the architecture of the mother house in Bellefontaine, France, the Trappists constructed the chirch in 1903-04, using local brick and stone. An east residential wing completed in 1905 matched the church in colour, materials and brick detailing. Bt 1912 there were 47 monks living here.

My brother and I would canoe past the monastary in the early 70's. It was quite startling to see a monk (in hood and robes)pop his head up from the brush at the edge of the river. There was also the remains of a large mink farm slightly upriver from the monastary. Much of the area is now being developed for the new"Southwood Golf and Country Club"
