This image is take looking Northeasterly. Lake Berry on the left, Lake Spier in the middle and part of Lake Baldwin on the right.
I was stationed at Orlando AFB (Aug 60-Aug 63) and visited here in '71 after Orlando NTC took over. Couldn't recognize much then and even less now. If you go to Google Earth>Timeline>slide L to 10 Mar 94 it's a fairly decent view, but still nothing much (except Lake Baldwin) recognizable. Pat E6 USAF Ret since '72
Never knew Orlando was an AFB...but then again I wasn't born until '70. Unfortunately it's hard to find aerials of the base. I found this one while surfing the net with a lot of PATIENCE. The aerial photograph in the "yearbook" from boot camp has a bunch of writing on it otherwise it would have been a good shot. Yeah, I totally dig the timeline feature in Google Earth.
My Dad worked on the Naval Base for 15 years making training films. We used to go swimming and fishing in Lake Baldwin. I also attended Glenridge Junior High which was right across the street from the Navy Base. There was also an orange grove right next to Glenridge. We used to skip school, cut through the orange grove, behind the old folks home and through some woods to go swimming in Lake Berry. But all of that is gone now. The Navy Base is housing, Glenridge moved and the orange grove is long gone. All my memories have been paved over and developed.
I too have fond memories of the RTC/NTC....was a recruit in 1972 Company 116 Orlando. The best bootcamp the Navy had of the three at the time. Excellent facilities, barracks, etc. I'll never understand why they let it go and went with Great Lakes. I went to PN "A" school and eventually return to be a PN Classifier at NTC. It was fun working with the recruits. Eventually returned again, for Recruiting training as an Officer. I had two sons born at the hospital...I don't know if that facility is still there or not. Its hard to imagine that its all gone....sad but true.
Anybody out there have someone named Sharon Renstrom from Naples, FL in their bootcamp in 1972? She was a friend in high school and we lost contact.
Great memories....I went through RTC Orlando in 1990, Would love to get in touch with my old buddies too. Billy and Scotty.
Best ways to get in contact with old shipmates is navy.togetherweserved.com or you can try military.com.
