The building was built in 1892 as the Thurston County Courthouse, but couldn’t afford it. The State purchased the building in 1901 for use as the capitol building, adding a wing on the east side. Lawmakers started using the building in 1905. The building served as the statehouse until 1928, but is still known locally as “The Old Capitol”. This is one of the most elaborate and spectacular buildings in Olympia.
