I like it, Lilypon :-) It must be common in Saskatchewan, with what you tell me of these sentinels, to have the name of the town in large letters on the side. In the US, we have the same thing with water towers, usually in a place easy to see from the road.

Yep all the elevators here have the town's name as do many of the water towers as well. The one above was purchased, either by the town or the farmer(s), to store the grain until a rented semi (or a small train they purchased) hauls it to an Inland Terminal. The ones that are now privately owned have painted over the previous owner's name (ie. Pool, Cargill, United Grain Growers or Patterson).
Some towns also purchase them for sentimental reasons (and most likely to rent the storage space but some are museums) if they could get the money together before the large grain conglomerate destroyed them (that often happened almost the day after the elevator was closed down).
This is my favourite]( . The new local owners can't afford to paint the elevators like the old owners could but some, like the one in the above link, age beautifully.
